Cottonwood is a Nice Little Town

For each town that we stay in long enough to learn about, we are going to include restaurant reviews and comments about various other retail establishments. We enjoy checking out new places, and maybe others can benefit from our experiences. The ratings here are 1=We probably won’t go back. 2=Good, but not great. 3=Better than average, worth returning. 4=Very tasty, definitely going back there. 5=Food from Heaven.

The new ones for this year are at the top of the list. Arby’s and Burger King are at the beginning of last year’s list).

Murphy’s Grill SpoerleinsSpoerleinsSpoerleins
This restaurant is kind of a combination of several different styles. The waiters wear either Hawaiian shirts or polo shirts. The food is what I would describe as nouveau southwest. They have specials ranging from fish to meatloaf sandwiches. They have a very large bar area and they do food and drinks at Happy Hour. We have eaten there a few times and the food is pretty good. We will go again.
McClain’s Diner SpoerleinsSpoerleins
These guys advertise on the local radio station as a fifties style diner. They are not exactly that. They are decorated that way though and the food is OK. Nothing special.

Wow! A Chinese restaurant with a better deal than the buffet. Their buffet looks kind of sad, but their lunch specials are amazing. For around $5.00, you get soup, an egg roll, fried rice, and an entree. They sure don’t scimp on the size of the servings, and the food is very good. This is definitely a keeper. We have a number of items on their menu that we want to try for dinner too.

Since the old breakfast place, Michael D’s is gone, we decided to try this restaurant. It is a chain, but we have never been in one before. Their breakfast skillets are a good size for real people-not overly gigantic like some of the other chains. The prices are about the same as the other chains, but possibly slightly lower. We will try them for lunch soon.
Arbys, Burger King, McDonalds, Peter Piper Pizza, Subway, Taco Bell No rating

They are all pretty much standard.
Ming House SpoerleinsSpoerleinsSpoerleins
This is a smallish Chinese restaurant with an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for $4.99 during the week and $5.25 on Sunday. They also have what they call Express Take Out and they deliver! Their food is pretty good, although they seem to stack the buffet with sweet and sour dishes.
KFC We did not include KFC with the other fast food places because they also have a lunch and dinner all-you-can-eat buffet. It is the only KFC buffet we have ever seen.
Sizzler SpoerleinsSpoerleins
As Sizzlers go, they are about average. What can you say; as a franchise they are a step up from the fast food genre, but they have a buffet too. The buffet doesn’t really have very much in it that interests us, but they have tacos for the kids.
Michael D’s No longer there. Too bad.

This is a little Mexican place in the middle of Olde Towne Cottonwood. From the outside it looks just like Mexico. On the inside, it reminds me a bit of the restaurant my brother’s mother in law owns in Mexico. The food is very mild New Mexican style and the owner is also the waiter and chef. It is a nice little place, and we would definitely go there again. I had a green chile beef burrito and Gary had a red one. Along with some iced tea and a tip, we spent $15.00.
The Parlor Co. SpoerleinsSpoerleinsSpoerleins
We went to this former one-room schoolhouse, former grocery store, and house to celebrate our anniversary. It is owned by 2 women and is open from 11AM to 2PM. There is a surprisingly large menu with some great specials. It is a soup, sandwich, and salad place with food that is out of the ordinary. I had the special which includes 4 items from a list of salads and breads. Each was pretty good. Gary had a southwest roast beef sandwich that had a green chile added to the standard sandwich. We would definitely go here again.

Groceries
Frys, Bashas, and Safeway Frys is the biggest store, Safeway has the friendliest people and Bashas has more obscure items.
Other Misc Stores
There is a pretty well-stocked art supply store. We stopped in one day looking for a stretcher frame.
The public library, which is only 5 years old has a pretty good selection, and they can get books from Prescott and Flagstaff if you want them to. They also issue a lifetime card. Wow!
The public library, which is only 5 years old has a pretty good selection, and there is a camera shop that sells the usual supplies, antique cameras, and has one-hour processing.
There is a miniature JC Penneys, a Walmart, and lots of antique shops.
