Pithouse Dwellings

Pithouse Diagram Pit houses were generally square and sometimes rectangular. They were dug into the ground, and had dirt walls. The roof was supported by poles set into the floor. The poles were connected in a square and many logs slanted from the walls up to the center square. The logs were covered with bark, brush, and dirt. The door was a hole in the roof with a ladder through it (the hole was also a smoke hole). Pit houses were used for living in and for a few activities that were not done outside.
