Palatki Rock Art

These are some of the pictographs we saw at the Palatki Red Cliffs site. If you click on one of the images, you can see a photograph of it. All the photos came from a series of alcoves on the west side of a small box canyon. Most of the artwork is pictographs, which are paintings. There are a few petroglyphs, which are figures chipped into the rock. The art represents a chronology of human occupation in this area from the Archaic Period (3000 - 6000 years ago) to the Southern Sinagua (AD 650 - 1300) through the Yavapai and Apache (AD 1400 through the 1800s) and on into the earliest Euro-American settlers in the late 1800s. (Actually there is a date of 1888 scratched into the rock by early settlers).
